Welcome to the world of Melanie Rees Art
My paintings explore the space between memory, emotion and landscape.
Working from my studio in Canberra, Australia, I create atmospheric landscapes inspired by the natural world, meditation, and the quiet moments that allow us to reconnect with ourselves. Many of my paintings are inspired by the landscapes I encounter in meditation. Vast skies, distant horizons, shifting light and quiet expanses become visual metaphors for peace, resilience, hope and perspective.
Rather than documenting a specific location, I seek to capture a feeling. My work sits somewhere between reality and imagination, inviting viewers to step beyond the noise of everyday life and into a place of stillness, wonder and reflection. I am drawn to those fleeting moments when light transforms a landscape, when clouds part after a storm, or when the horizon seems to stretch endlessly into possibility.
Using layers of acrylic, oil and mixed media, I build surfaces rich with atmosphere, texture and depth. Each painting develops intuitively, guided as much by emotion and instinct as by observation. The resulting landscapes are often dreamlike and open-ended, allowing each viewer to bring their own memories, experiences and meanings to the work.
As a neurodivergent artist, I experience the world through a heightened awareness of pattern, colour, emotion and detail. Art has long been both a sanctuary and a language for me, a way of expressing things that cannot always be put into words. Through painting, I explore not only the outer landscape, but the inner landscapes we all carry within us.
Over the years, my work has been exhibited locally and internationally and has found homes in private collections across Australia and beyond. While my artistic journey has evolved through many styles and subjects, a common thread has always remained: a desire to create work that connects emotionally and speaks to something deeper than the visible world.
Whether you’re here to collect a painting, explore the gallery, or simply pause for a moment, I hope these landscapes offer a place to breathe, reflect, and perhaps recognise something of your own story within them.
Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
